Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
