American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, causing airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to setbacks due to climate and additional factors.

More than three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the pressure," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with several controllers to hear their worries directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, can I secure another source of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields said travel would be delayed due to a lack of workers - among the peak since the shutdown started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in history.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would slow down the number of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," Duffy stated.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, leading to interruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as other flights stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The FAA alert went out at 8:45 AM in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were operating normally by midday.
