Condemnation Surges as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Rebuke
Figures from both sides of the political spectrum and the Hollywood world are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking deaths of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Online Statement
After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to describe the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". The post, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the anger he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Authorities have since announced the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was established at a significant amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures
The response to Trump's post was swift and scathing.
This is a appalling and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also criticized the statements. She pointed to previous comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from His Own Party
A number of GOP elected officials also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged members in his party to defend the comments.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.
"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and condemned political violence without reservation after the shooting of another individual.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
