The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique fears and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms where their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
