As stated by a high-ranking military spokesperson, the US armed forces carried out a fatal strike on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing four individuals.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. A total of four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no US military forces were harmed.”

Background and Recent Strikes

The statement follows a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military presence.

Just on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Administration Justifies Tactics Amid Scrutiny

The administration has encountered increasing demands to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, officials have declined to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of lawful warfare.

While the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a senior aide seemed to confirm a broader geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”

This suggests the military campaign may be part of a push to oust Venezuela's sitting leadership.
